The boys soccer teams played under the guidance of new varsity coach Joe Shamanski and JV coach Christian Zurchauer. The boys season quickly showed the impact of the new coaching strategies. These changes, especially when it comes to team chemistry, were “the biggest part of the success,” according to varsity captain Owen Soper.
With a record of nine wins, five losses and four ties (9-5-4), it was clear that there was a significant shift in the boys’ varsity team.
Shamanski explained that practices have led to success on the field.
“We’re just a lot more focused playing our style of soccer and staying smart and keeping on the good side of the referee,” he said.
At the same time, new JV coach, Christian Zurchauer, worked hard to make an easier transition from JV to varsity for his players.
“My hope is that I can develop younger kids at a lower level so when they get to that varsity level, they already have a jump start on everyone else,” he said. “The way we’re coaching soccer is more student-centered.”
Another notable change that took place this season was the shift in team culture. According to Zurchauer, this year’s coaches focused on “expanding on and off the field” through team community service and “Family Fridays,” where the whole team hung out together. Soper believes this sense of community off the field greatly contributed to success on the field with closer team chemistry.
These important changes can already be seen in the team’s current record and will likely continue to be seen in future seasons.
