Former President Donald Trump turned himself in to Fulton County Jail on August 24th, after being indicted for efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election in Georgia. The former president faces 91 charges, 13 of them in Georgia, all of which he denies. The mugshot, which quickly went viral, depicts the former president in his usual navy suit and red tie.
Trump’s mugshot garnered support for his campaign, raising $7.1 million only a few days after the photo was released. Additionally, August 25th became the campaign’s highest-grossing day, raising $4.18 million in support for the former president.
Trump’s supporters have reclaimed this photo to promote the Trump campaign. Merchandise, including t-shirts, have been sold by the campaign and worn by supporters to promote Trump in running in the 2024 presidential election.
Whether the mugshot will prove to be an advantage for Trump is still uncertain.
“It could be considered a political win’ if you will for the Democratic Party because that is something that they can easily rely on in the campaign – that none of their candidates are facing a criminal charge of any kind,” said social studies teacher Brittany Laurent. “When push comes to shove, this could be one of their biggest cards to play if they feel the need to personally retaliate [against the Republican Party].”
Even if Trump is convicted of a crime, he will still be able to run for president in the 2024 election. Trump and his campaign remain optimistic in spite of the mugshot and the charges he faces.
With mixed reactions to the mugshot, it’s hard to say what’s in store for the future of both parties running for the presidential election next fall. One thing is certain though, the mugshot taken of Donald Trump will forever hold its place in American history as being the first presidential candidate to have a mugshot taken.
