Looking for something fun to do after school? Interact Club meets on Wednesdays in room 111 with a main focus on serving the community. “Service Above Self” is the motto of the club, where students put their passion for helping others into high gear. This year, the club intends to concentrate its efforts on the Royal Oak community and has some new faces in leadership positions. The new officers include: Natalie Keveney as president, Keira Eberle as vice president, Sama Sahib as communications director, and Haneen Awada as creative director. English teacher Maria Manolias has taken on a new role as the club’s adviser and is set on making the club’s motto a reality.
“It’s in the slogan, ‘Service Above Self.’ It means putting aside your own personal aspirations and the things you want and thinking about how we can best support our high school community and doing our best to help in any way we can,” said Manolias.
The club sponsors multiple events throughout the year, including charity and social events.
“We like to do a toy breakfast. We always do a Halloween event, which is a fun, and social event, and we’ll do cookies for coats — stuff like that,” said Keveney.
Manolias and the four officers organize and facilitate the club’s activities.
“Truly, all four of us plan things together and run things together. It’s a very collaborative staff,” said Keveney, who is in charge of planning meetings, developing agendas, and ensuring everything runs smoothly.
Eberle helps with tasks that require multiple people. If there is ever a problem, she is there to help resolve it. She also takes on Keveney’s responsibilities if she is absent. Awada makes the club’s Instagram posts and posters, ensuring the word gets out. Sahib is in charge of contacting and communicating with people for the club and serves as a bridge between the club and community members.
Interact Club is unquestionably a prominent part of Royal Oak High School. Everyone is welcome, and there is always time to join.
“I’m excited that the officers and I get to share our passion with the rest of the student body,” said Keveney.
