Senior Jack Winterburn earned Michigan Division 1 All-State Honorable Mention for Boys Soccer. Winterburn was one of 120 players recognized by the Michigan High School Soccer Coaches Association.
Honorees were selected based upon nominations from coaches and the players’ performances throughout the 2023 season.
Winterburn attributed his success to his teammates.
“Our team this year was great. The kinds of bonds we made and the chemistry we had on the field was something I’ve never played with before, and I think that really allowed me to perform my best,” he said.
The team had a strong showing throughout the season, resulting in an impressive record of 10-4-4. Even during tough games, Winterburn demonstrated his strengths when the pressure was most prevalent. Scoring the lone Royal Oak goal during the team’s postseason run, he ended his high school soccer career doing what he does best: scoring goals. With 15 goals in 15 games played, Winterburn helped lead his team to their first OAA White League Championship for Royal Oak in thirteen years. He hopes that the program continues to achieve success in the future, and acknowledged that team camaraderie is essential.
“Of course you need skills to play on a soccer team at this level, but I think what is more important is the way you can connect with your teammates and the way you’re able to build each other up,” he said.
