For most students, senior year is about graduation parties and college decisions. For Colin Bibbs, it also means preparing to leave for one of the most competitive military schools in the country: the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs.
Bibbs recently received an official military appointment to the academy, earning a fully funded four-year education while preparing for a future in military service. In this Q&A, he shares what the process was like, who supported him along the way, and what he’s looking forward to most.
Q: What steps did you take to achieve this appointment?
A: “I started the application process back in March of last year. You really have to apply just to become a candidate, and after that, there are interviews, fitness tests, and several other steps.
A lot of my preparation actually started back in sixth grade when I decided this was something I wanted to do. I made sure the classes I took and the extracurricular activities I joined helped build a well-rounded application. Most of it was already things I genuinely enjoyed, like serving my community and doing well in school, so it all came together naturally.”
Q: Why did you choose the Air Force?
A: “The Air Force has one of the best cyber and computer science education programs out of all the military branches. They also provide excellent opportunities and benefits.
And honestly, I like air conditioning.”
Q: Who supported you throughout the process?
A: “My parents were incredibly supportive and excited for me the entire time. I’ve also had a lot of support from people both in and outside the military.
Some teachers who really helped me were Mr. Snyder and Ms. Maudlin. Mr. Ralph also played a huge role by helping me prepare physically and being a positive role model over the years. My friends have all been really excited for me, too, which has meant a lot.”
Q: What does receiving the appointment mean?
A: “The appointment officially secures my spot at the academy. I leave in about 41 days.
It’s a four-year full-ride scholarship valued at around $600,000, and I’ll also receive a monthly stipend while attending. The academy offers an Ivy League-level education, and if I decide to continue my education afterward, that can also be covered.
More than anything, it’s a huge honor to be recognized as someone trusted to serve the country.”
Q: Do you plan to make the military your career?
A: “Yes, I do plan to make it a career. I want to work in intelligence with a focus on computer science.”
Q: What impressed you most when you toured the academy?
A: “I felt like I found my people there. Everyone was very goal-driven and motivated, but they also knew how to have fun.
The campus itself was also incredible. It’s in Colorado, surrounded by mountains, and it was just really beautiful.”
Q: What are you most looking forward to?
A: “I’m looking forward to meeting my classmates, going through basic training, and just experiencing everything.”
Q: What do you think will be the biggest challenge?
A: “The biggest challenge will probably be balancing military training with schoolwork. Every day is very structured, and there’s always something going on.
It’ll also be difficult balancing personal time and finding opportunities to relax because weekends and free time are limited.”
