Holidays present a time to appreciate what makes life special. The time of year, the presents that we give or receive, and especially the people

we hold dear make long-awaited holidays times to remember. As Valentine’s Day approaches, the Acorn staff finds all sorts of ways to celebrate. Some, like reporter Luther Frede, continue yearly traditions that make the day special.
“Because I’m in a long-distance relationship, I usually set aside my afternoon to call my boyfriend to talk or play games online with him for the day. I also usually buy flowers to get shipped to him,” said Frede.
Frede shares that he and his boyfriend have been continuing this tradition for four years. During times of the year like summer or winter break, the two often travel to see each other in person and spend time together shopping, eating out, or enjoying each other’s company at home.
“Calling my boyfriend on Valentine’s Day means a lot to me because we’ve been together for so long now, and he’s such a significant person in my life. It’s also nice to call him for longer, since it’s not every day I get to see him,” said Frede.

Although the idea of celebrating romantic relationships is what many tie to the holiday, celebrating
relationships with friends, family, and others is just as important. Reporter Mary Johnson and her friends celebrate Galentine’s Day yearly, complete with decorations, food, and music to make the day special.
“This get-together means a lot to us because platonic love is truly so special, and I love how close my friends and I are. It’s nice to remember that you don’t need a significant other to celebrate,” she said.
Although it’s the group’s second year celebrating together, Johnson says that everyone is excited to continue the tradition.
While many may spend the holiday with significant others or friends, pets are also celebrated on Valentine’s Day. Reporter Lincon Hesson-Reno enjoys spending Valentine’s Day with his dog, Sage.

“To me, the day represents a time to spend with all your loved ones,” he said.
Hesson-Reno’s family welcomed Sage in 2022. Since then, he spends his time taking care of Sage and giving her a great home. Each year, Hesson-Reno takes time on Valentine’s Day to recognize Sage and the positive impact she’s had in his life.
“How I spend the holiday each year looks a little different, but I always make sure to spend some quality time with her. Spending the day with Sage and the rest of my family this year is incredibly special to me because I have such a bond with my dog, she makes me really happy,” he said.
Acorn staff members are undoubtedly excited to celebrate the holiday and create many different memories with the people they love- just see the graphic below to see what the rest of our staff is up to! Whoever you may be spending Valentine’s Day with this year, let this be a reminder that the day can be special, regardless of who you’re spending time with.
